Estavillo’s Laughter Yoga – Best way to relieve stress

Laughter yoga is described by author, Marjorie Gorospe, in the Yahoo! News as “an excellent way to relieve stress.”

In her article dated July 7, 2011, she traces the origin of laughter yoga to the time when the saying “laughter is the best medicine” was coined dating i norge. “This is why an evolving form of yoga is becoming popular in the country which makes use of laughter as its main principle.”

Laughter yoga or “LYoga” was founded by Dr. Madan and Madhuri Kataria in India. In the studies conducted by Dr. Kataria, our bodies release a cocktail of hormones and chemicals that have startling, positive effects on our system as we laugh. Therefore, stress is reduced, blood pressure drops, depression is lifted and your immune system is boosted.

“LYoga” was later brought to the Philippines by Elvie Estavillo and she soon established the Laughter Yoga of the Philippines in 2008.”

    The Founder

Elvie Punzalan-Estavillo, Founder of the Laughter Yoga Club of the Philippines, lectures on the topic: Happy Healing Laughter Yoga” during the General Membership Meeting on November 22, 2011 at 12 noon at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Makati City.

She is the pioneer and founder of Laughter Yoga Club of the Philippines, and the one and only certified Laughter Yoga Leader and Teacher in our country.

“In Laughter Yoga, laughter is a tool and not an emotion. The tension-releasing laughter exercises are combined with stretching exercises, rythmic clapping and chanting in unison.

According to Elvie, she initially started with a few students in Metro Manila. “LYoga” proved to be a hit among Filipinos.

“I love to laugh and I carry laughter wherever I go and I can say that it really reinforces positive response. So I somehow concluded that many Filipinos need laughter to help them relax and de-stress,” says Elvie.

Elvie says that during difficult times, “LYoga” is a good way to relax. Since she started the yoga sessions, she has steadily gained students from all over the country inviting her to come over and conduct “LYoga”.

“It is Elvie’s advocacy to help Filipinos (Kababayans) become healthy, happy and positive. She believes that if all Filipinos will be doing Laughter Yoga – graft and corruption, and terrorism will be lessened considerably thus help our country achieve lasting peace and prosperity shared by all.”

    Mission and Vission

Laughter Yoga’s mission and vision, according to its pioneer and founder, Elvie Estavillo is:
1. To spread Laughter Yoga to our kababayans and help them become healthier and happier;
2. To act as an instrument in helping our public school children and teachers by providing clean running water and clean restrooms;
3. To act as bridge between companies and individuals in reaching out to our school children – the future and hope of our beloved Inang Bayan;
4. To help transform our kababayan’s mindset into a positive state and adapt an ever-optimistic attitude – thus help our country attain lasting peace and prosperity enjoyed by all.

“Elvie regularly conducts Laughter Yoga sessions in various companies and organizations. The fees received from her sessions are utilized in putting up toilets and providing water supply system in public schools, and she makes a yearly report on this in her column.”

In the Philippine Star, Elvie has her regular column every other Tuesday, “Laughingly Yours”, and her monthly “Thoughts To Guide Us By”.

“I have about 70 standing requests for LYoga sessions to date from Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Cebu, Legazpi, Baguio, Pangasinan, Butuan and Cavite”, Elvie says.

She adds those who may want to try “LYoga” should first believe in the power of yoga to reap its health benefits.
